THE LOVE BRICK

My friend and letter cutter Julie Rezac, sent me a rubbing of this gravestone. Cut with beautiful clean Roman capitals. I traced these letters to create this work for my nephew Tom, who is getting married to Stephenie Wyatt, in April of this year. The wood used is Iroko wood. Iroko is a large hardwood tree from the west coast of Africa. It is sometimes referred to as African Teak. It is used mainly for boat-building, domestic flooring and furniture. I did not find it ideal for carving letters. But it polished very nicely, giving a very smooth finish.

I do love these knots that appear in these off cuts of wood.
